The circulatory system works as transportation for every thing your body needs and its center organism is the heart, which has two sides (the left and the right) and it has four chambers, including two that go in to the heart called atrium and 2 that go out of the heart called ventricles.

Arteries are the connections that branch out of the heart and deliver materials out into the rest of the body. Veins on the other hand, do the opposite of what arteries do, which is to return back the transportation to its body, but usually not in it original form. For example, when artieries bring oxygen out of the heart and move it to the rest of the body, veins bring back carbon dioxide into the heart.

Heart Attacks

A heart attack happens when the flow of oxygen to a section of you heart muscle suddenly gets blocked, and if the blood flow isn’t restored quickly, the section of the heart that got blocked begins to die. Unfortunately, heart attacks are one of most common killers of both men and women in the United States, and heart attacks usually occur as a result of coronary artery/heart disease. Coronary heart disease is a condition in which plaque, any waxy or hard substance, builds up inside the coronary arteries. As you see in the diagram below, as plaque builds up in the arteries, the accumulation of blood cells that cannot get through block the artery, and if the blockage of these blood cells does not open and recover, then the portion of the hear t that is receiving these materials begins to die and not function. Then that’s when the heart attack occurs, when one part of the heart stops functioning correctly and eventually the heart would have lost a working part.

Another less common reason why people suffer heart attacks is because of a severe spasm, or a tightening of a coronary artery. A spasm or tightening of a coronary artery is when there is a temporary, sudden narrowing of one of the coronary arteries that work in the circulatory system, and because oxygen-rich blood cannot connect to the heart, a part of the heart “starves” or stops working.

A spasm is usually related to the build-up of plaque in arteries, as well as the coronary artery disease, giving precaution to how one must control their fat amount in their regular lifestyle. Plaque builds up due to high-fat diets and lack of exercise, so one must take the warning that if you don’t control your fat amount gone into your body, you are at risk of getting a heart attack because of coronary artery disease or a severe spasm. Heart attacks also happen because of severe health problems, such as heart failure and life-threatening arrhythmias. An arrhythmia is a problem with one’s heartbeat, either being too slow, too fast, or two irregular to sustain.

Strokes are injuries caused in the brain because of an interruption of blood flow into the brain. Stroke is an injury to the brain caused by an interruption of the brain's blood supply. In strokes, a blood clot or a ruptured artery or blood vessel interrupts the blood flow to a certain area in the brain. Blood supplies the body with oxygen so when strokes occur, the lack of oxygen and glucose leads to death of brain cells. This often causes brain damage such as problems with speech, memory, and movement.

The two main types of strokes are ischemic strokes and hemorrhagic strokes. Ischemic strokes are responsible for about 75% of all strokes. It is when a blood clot forms in the arteries and blocks blood flow. Clots may also from in other parts of the body and flow to your blood, getting to the brain and causing an ischemic stroke. Hemorrhagic strokes are when an artery bursts and fills the surrounding tissue with blood. It can also be when a blood vessel on the brain’s surface ruptures (breaks) and fills the space between the brain and the skull with blood. These cause lack of blood flow to the brain and also the blood that comes out creates a great amount of pressure to the brain.


The damage created by the stroke depends on how much of the brain was affected and in what part of the brain it happened. Minor strokes may cause weakness in an arm or leg, while larger strokes can cause paralysis and death. Some other effects are vision problems, communication difficulties, and depression.
Strokes are not predictable and anyone could suffer one. Even though they are out of our control, one may try to prevent them with a good nutrition, exercise, and proper medical care. Still, there are some factors that increase the probability of having a stroke. Some of these are smoking, diabetes, being overweight, use of drugs or high levels of alcohol, and high blood pressure. Some symptoms of a stroke are dizziness, having trouble walking, loss of balance and coordination, sudden severe headaches, weakness, doubled, blurred, or blackened vision, and speech problems. Small strokes may not show symptoms.
